High above Los Angeles in Bel Air, the Orum Residence occupies the kind of setting that immediately explains the architecture. The city spreads out below, the Getty Center sits within view and, on the horizon, the Pacific Ocean completes a panorama that seems to stretch endlessly.
Architect Zoltan Pali designed the approximately 18,850-square-foot residence as three distinct wings, each positioned to make the most of its elevated site. The result is a house of considerable scale that never loses sight of what makes the location so special.
Glass is everywhere, but it serves a purpose beyond making an architectural statement. Floor-to-ceiling windows open the interiors to the landscape and fill the rooms with natural light. As the day progresses, the exterior changes with it, reflecting the sky and surrounding hills before becoming more transparent as evening approaches and Los Angeles begins to light up below.
It is this connection with the setting that gives the Orum Residence much of its character. Some of the world’s most memorable homes are not simply placed on extraordinary sites; they are designed because of them. Here, the views influence the orientation of the rooms, the abundance of glass and the sense of openness felt throughout the house.
Inside, the mood is contemporary without feeling cold. Steel, glass and strong architectural lines are softened by expansive living areas that are meant to be enjoyed, whether for a large gathering or a quiet evening overlooking the city. The three-wing layout also gives the house a natural sense of separation, allowing its more social spaces and private areas to exist comfortably alongside one another.
There are nine bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, but numbers only tell part of the story. What stands out is the feeling of space and the way the rooms remain connected to the outdoors. Even within a residence of this size, there are places that feel private and removed from the rest of the house.

Bel Air has long provided a quieter counterpoint to the energy of Los Angeles, and the Orum Residence takes that sense of retreat even further.
