It was clear from the start that collectors would have to pay a premium for the Macallan Distil Your World New York Edition. The 1,000 bottles of whiskey were initially priced at $4,300 but sold online for four times that amount.
Auction house Sotheby’s in New York City received $250,000 on Friday for a rare Single Cask Edition. In the end, a private collector from Asia paid three times the pre-sale estimate for the bottle, which was one of only two produced by the famous distillery. The second bottle will be stored permanently in the Macallan library.
Macallan has released their second Distil Your World whisky. In contrast to the first, which emphasized London’s preferences, this one draws attention to New York’s signature aromas.
The first spirit was aged in a combination of European and American oak barrels with sherry for six months. However, the 2002 sherry-aged European oak puncheon used to make the Single Cask Edition that was sold on Friday.
On the nose, both whiskies have notes of apple and citrus; on the tongue, they offer flavors of dark chocolate, burnt orange, and cherry syrup; and on the finish, they impart a hint of spice. Additionally, the Single Cask Edition has a distinct candy flavor with a hint of cherry blossom.
A brochure detailing the bottle and the Distil Your World New York series was included in the blue presentation box with an engraved aerial map of New York. The brochure was signed by the stars of the Distil Your World New York documentary that premiered at the same time as the bottle.
Single-cask whisky from a European Oak Sherry Puncheon, The Macallan Distil Your World New York Single Cask Edition is available only in New York. This cask-strength dram of 2002-vintage whiskey was bottled at 55% alcohol by volume.
