Montblanc debuted its spider-inspired pen in 1920. Nearly a century later, the brand revisits the same theme for its new limited edition fountain pen, set in solid white gold adorned with 13 carats of diamonds worth US$625,000.
An ancient metaphor for the creative act of writing, the spider is a symbolic representation of the author who artfully weaves words into an intricate web of poetry. A recurring theme in literature as early as the metamorphosis of Arachne as told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses, the spider became a prominent subject in the late 18th and early 20th centuries, featured in the writing of Valéry, Ponge and Mallarmé. Influenced by the cultural prominence of this captivating creature, Montblanc introduced its first spider-inspired writing instrument in the 1920s in celebration of creativity, poetry and the art of transforming raw materials into artistic masterpieces
The High Artistry Heritage Spider Metamorphosis Limited Edition 1 White Gold features a solid white gold cap and barrel elegantly set with a full pavé of brilliant diamonds. The spider web motif is created in three-dimension from Au 750 solid gold with every individual piece hand engraved and hand polished. Its cap is decorated with a radiant spider made from a pear cut diamond (approx. 0,62 ct D/F) with its legs set with an additional 16 diamonds. The jewel secured with a unique triple closure mechanism can be removed to be worn separately as a bracelet or a brooch. The top of the cap is modelled like a spider with a generous brilliant cut diamond as its body (5,25 cts, D/FL) and two brilliant cut diamonds as its eyes. The end of the pen’s clip is set with a baguette diamond. The nib features a special representation of the spider engraved in the Au750 solid gold embellished with two brilliant cut diamonds.
In their own metamorphosis, two of the editions can be transformed from writing instrument into jewellery piece. The removable ornamental spider on the fountain pen can be worn as a bangle, tiepin or brooch thanks to the jewellery pieces included in the set.
Using advanced stone-cutting techniques, the cap of the pen is decorated with an ornamental spider set in solid gold. The body of the spider is made from a pear cut diamond and its legs are set with 16 diamonds. It is assembled using a triple closure mechanism.
The pen set comes with a bangle and a clip. The spider can be detached from the pen and worn on the bangle or as a tie pin or a brooch. The top of the cap is also modelled like a spider, with a 5ct brilliant cut diamond as its body and two brilliant cut diamonds as its eyes.
